Frequently asked questions

How do I get a free at-home over-the-counter COVID-19 test?

As of Jan 15, 2022, individuals with private health insurance coverage can submit a claim for reimbursement for FDA-authorized over-the-counter COVID-19 tests purchased online or in store.

Depending on your provider, you'll be asked to submit a receipt as proof of purchase in order to receive reimbursement. Some insurance companies will provide direct coverage, meaning your test will be free at the point of sale. If your plan has set up a network of preferred providers at which you can obtain a test with no out-of-pocket expense, you can still obtain tests from other retailers outside of that network. Read more here.

Will I have to pay for my test up front?

It depends. The government is strongly incentivizing health plans to set up a network of convenient locations across the country, such as pharmacies and retailers, where those with private health coverage can purchase over-the-counter COVID-19 tests for free, rather than having to submit claims for reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider to see if they offer such a program.

If not, make sure to hold on to your receipt so you can file a claim for reimbursement. Read More Here.

What if I already bought and paid for at-home over-the-counter COVID-19 tests? Can I still get reimbursement for those?

Health insurers are not required by law to provide reimbursement for over-the-counter COVID-19 tests purchases prior to Jan. 15, 2022. Please contact your provider directly to see if they have decided to provide reimbursement before that date. Some states may have existing requirements related to coverage of at-home over-the-counter COVID-19 tests. Read more here.

How many tests can I get reimbursed for?

Health insurance providers are required to cover up to eight over-the-counter COVID-19 tests per month per person, regardless of how they are packaged or distributed. That means a family of four can get 32 tests per month for free.

Please note that some COVID-19 test kits are sold with multiple tests per box. There is no limit to the number of COVID-19 tests, including at-home tests, providers must cover when ordered or administered by a health care provider. Learn more here.
